Pakistan’s Comprehensive strategy to Combat mPoks

In response to rising global concerns over the spread of mPoks, formerly known as monkeypox, Pakistan has formulated a detailed strategy to protect its citizens, according to prime minister’s coordinator for Health, Doctor Malik mukhtar Ahmed. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday, Dr Ahmed assured the public that there is no need for alarm as the situation is being closely monitored, with only one suspected case reported in the country.
mPoks, a virus that spread throw close contact, has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the world Health organization (WHO) following the identification of a new more transmissible variant. This new variant has already prompted global Eunice due to its potential to spread more easily. The first international Case was confirmed in Sweden, linked to an outbreak in Africa.
Dr Ahmed highlighted that comprehensive surveillance millions have been implemented across all airports and entry points in Pakistan. He emphasized that libertaries have been equipped in all provinces and the federal capital of accurate diagnosis.
“We are monitoring travelers, especially those arriving from Africa, America and the Gulf”,He said, reiterating the government’s proactive Stance under prime minister Shahbaz sharif’s leadership.
The prime Minister has also directed The national command and operations center ncoc(NCOC) to remain vigilant, ensuring daily evolution of the situation. During a high level-meeting PM shahbaz Sharif ordered enhance screening my years at all airports, seaports and border crossings. He emphasized the importance of public awareness and instructed that an effective campaign be launched. The prime Minister also called for continuous updates on the mPoks situation, signaling his intent to hold weekly briefings.
In mardan a district in Khyber Pakhrunkhwa, the first suspected case has been quarantined. The patient who recently returned from abroad was diagnosed and is currently under medical supervision, with his condition reported to be stable. Authorities have assured that no local transmission of the virus has been detected thus for.
Dr Ahmed urged the public to remain cautious and advised that anyone displaying symptoms or having a recent travel history should self-isolate and seek medical attention. The lightest can take up to 15 days for symptoms to appear and close contact with an infected person increases the risk of transmission, he warned.
Meanwhile Islamabad about deputy commissioner Irfan Nawaz conducted an inspection of the screening process at Islamabad airport, ensuring that all incoming international passengers are thoroughly screened .He confirmed that any passenger showing symptoms would be isolated and transferred to the Pakistan institute of medical Science (PIMS) hospital. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also stepped up in efforts with special Myers in place at airports in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However,Dr Ahmad downplayed the need for Mass vaccination, stating that the current situation does not warrant such measures.
The global situation remains tense with over 27,000 cases and more than 1,100 that’s reported since January 2023 primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO has expressed concern over the disease’s potential to cause several illnesses especially in children’s.
As Pakistan Ramps up its efforts to curb the spread of mPoks the government’s Swift response underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in facing public Health threats. The situation remains under control but the public is urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
