PESHAWAR – In a major breakthrough on Wednesday night, security personnel conducted successful intelligence-based operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, eliminating five militants in independent encounters, as verified by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The operations specifically were conducted in Tank and North Waziristan districts, which had been zones of insurgent activities in the recent past. Officially, the militants were directly held responsible for attacking security agencies and targeting innocent civilians.
Quick Response on Intelligence
The operation was conducted after there was credible intelligence putting the whereabouts of the wanted. “Our forces acted swiftly and effectively. Once we had the information, the teams were deployed,” a high-ranking security official briefed on the issue explained.
A brief but intense exchange of gunfire was fired in the confrontations. The five suspects were shot dead on the spot. A cache of weapons, ammunition, and electronic devices was confiscated, which police claim can be utilized for tracking the larger network.
Communities on High Alert
Locals from neighboring villages attested to hearing midnight fire, followed by sounds of movement by the military tanks subsequently. While some feared escalating tensions, others welcomed the prompt response. “These guys [militants] are intimidating. We desire peace to last forever,” a veteran North Waziristan local resident said.
Security Forces Reaffirm Commitment
ISPR press release also reiterated the resolve of the army in eliminating all the menaces to national peace. “We are determined on taking every step towards maintaining law and order. Our operation will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated,” was what was said.
A Larger Battle
Experts opine that although these operations yield short-term dividends, long-term peace in the region will involve a mix of security, development, and representative government. Most of the tribal regions, even after being cleared of militants, continue to suffer from economic and educational problems.
The government has asked the civilians to remain vigilant and assist the law and order machinery by reporting suspicious activities.
With five additional militants off the radar, security officials say it’s in the right direction—but far from the crossing point
