Vaping is now banned across Punjab. The provincial government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has ordered a complete crackdown on the sale and use of electric cigarettes — a decision made in the latest cabinet meeting held in Lahore.
Maryam Nawaz said the growing use of vapes among youth is becoming a serious health risk. “We can’t allow addiction and long-term diseases to spread unchecked. The health of our young generation is more important,” she said.
Local authorities have already started preparing for action. Shops will be inspected. Sellers will be booked if found violating the ban.
This isn’t the only big decision made during the cabinet meeting.
Electricity Bills to Go Down
Another major relief was announced — a 30% to 40% cut in electricity rates for households connected to Punjab’s own power producers like Quaid-e-Azam Thermal and Punjab Thermal Power.
“People are suffering with bills. We had to act. We’re not here to make speeches, we’re here to do work,” said CM Maryam during the session. She added that Punjab is the first province in Pakistan to voluntarily reduce electricity prices.
This will help thousands of families who’ve been struggling to pay high monthly bills. The change is expected to take effect soon, and people will see the difference in upcoming billing cycles.
First Airline, Free E-Taxis Also Announced
The cabinet also approved Punjab’s first-ever airline and a new plan to introduce 1,100 free electric taxis in Lahore. The aim is to support green transport and help create jobs.
The taxis will be electric, so they won’t add to the pollution. Young people looking for work will be prioritized in the distribution process. Officials say it’s part of a bigger plan to go green and modern at the same time.
In total, the cabinet reviewed 101 points — most of them focused on easing public burden and speeding up development. Digital projects, transport reforms, and environmental steps are also on the list.
Punjab seems to be moving fast — but whether the change feels real on the ground, we’ll know in the coming months.
