There’s commodity oddly frustrating about Mann Mast Malang. It sets out with romantic faculty, seesawing( rather loudly) toward Shakespeare, promising an emotional trip. But if you’re hoping for lyrical passion, concentrated characters, or indeed a coherent narrative you may want to look away. Let’s start with the title.” Wherefore art thou Romeo?” sounds more like a masterful piece of marketing than an factual adaption of the film’s content. Romeo, of course, was a man of frenetic love and wild abandon. Neither is present in Mann Mast Malang. What we do have is a muddled script, drenched in psychodrama and lacking in charm. The inner love is concave. The angstful lover, whose background is slightly dilate out at all, wanders across the picture with an inscrutable face and not a lot in terms of character description. His counterpart the” Juliet” in this case — thrums on and off as an abstraction further than as a living critter. It’s delicate to be bothered with them when neither has a clear motive beyond vague lyrical proclamations and comforting gapes out into the distance. And also, naturally, there is pacing. Scenes loiter far too long, especially when nothing is passing. A simple discussion turns into a stodgy regard- eschewal, shriek- eschewal, and melodramatic music- eschewal. Emotional scenes are undermined again and again by cumbrous dialogue that tries to be deep and comes out shallow. But stopgap exists. The cinematography delivers on its pledge — at least from time to time. The lookouts of the desert, the casts of the ancient armature, and the long takes of far-open skies give the film a material quality. Those images produce transitory moments of peace in an else diverting and colliding movie. The soundtrack’s music, still, is miss and not hit. There’s one or two good tracks, but the music intrudes. rather of supplementing the story, it drowns it out. There’s always a tendency towards getting emotion through volume and reiteration, and what occurs is that the fact that it’s there grows further intrusive. To its credit, Mann Mast Malang had high ideals. The desire is there. The themes it wants to examine — love, lust, religious vehemence — are high- inclined bones
. But prosecution is pivotal. And then, that is where the film fails. What could have been poetry turns into psychodrama rather. What could have been intimate rings rather histrionic and affected. In the end, the film asks this If you adopt Shakespeare’s stylish line, do not you owe us a love story to tell?
